The Solid Waste Division serves the needs of the County for the disposal of household garbage and for the recycling of various products. This division operates a Construction and Demolition Debris landfill located on Landfill Road just off the 127 By-Pass west of Laurens. The normal hours of operation for the landfill are Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. All loads delivered to the landfill must be received and unloaded at least 15 minutes before the posted closing times. A list of acceptable wastes for disposal and unacceptable wasted is posted within this web site. This department section currently employs seven (7) dedicated individuals.

The Laurens County Rural Collection Division operates ten (10) rural collection sites spread throughout the County. The normal hours of operation for these sites is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. All sites are closed on Wednesdays. This department section currently employs twelve (12) full time and twenty two (22) part time dedicated individuals.

Laurens County operates a Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill. The following list of items shows all materials that can be accepted for disposal by a C&D Landfill under the Solid Waste Regulations set by the State of South Carolina and regulated by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Immediately following the acceptable list is a list of items that are unacceptable as determined by DHEC.

These items will be directed by the attending staff as to where these materials are to be disposed.

Unacceptable Waste
The following types of waste have been determined to pose a potential threat to the environment and may be accepted at construction, demolition and land-clearing debris landfills. They include the following:

Waste having been in contact with lead-based paint, plaster and plasterboard, metal poles, concrete,painting equipment, wall paper, mechanical parts, containers (cans, buckets, etc.), lumber (siding, cabinets, shingles, etc.), waste having been in contact with petroleum products, storage tanks, containers, pipes, paper towels and rags, filters (oil, etc.), soil, concrete, absorbent (vermiculite), waste having been in contact with friable asbestos materials, pipe insulation, broken/chipped floor tiles, friable asbestos containing material,asbestos, cement products (crumbled / pulverized), roofing materials that have been cut with a saw, waste having been in contact with polychlorinated biphenols (PCB’s), transformers, capacitors, electrical components, lighting ballasts, any waste that has come in contact with any liquid containing PCB’s, waste having been in contact with solvents (industrial plants, chemical plants, laboratories, construction sites, etc.),caulking compounds, paint thinner, pipes, containers (packaging), filters, vats, pumps, flooring (wood, carpet), soil, storage tanks, absorbent glazing compounds, tar, cabinets (shelves), adhesives, cements, mechanical / machine parts (valves), waste having been in contact with preservatives (pentachlorophenol and creosote), waste having been in contact with pesticides/herbicides, railroad ties, utility poles, containers, soil, any mechanical part used in manufacturing processes, containers (packaging), vats, soil, concrete, wood (storage area), mechanical machine parts, any equipment used for application of misc waste, lamps (mercury), unpolished fiberglass (bondo), caulking tubes, liquid waste, paint thinner, paint, solid waste which may contain a waste or substance determined by the Department to be unacceptable.


Recycling
Laurens County also accepts a number of items for recycling. These items consist of the following:

  • Tires - five (5) per person without rims)
  • Paper – Newspapers, inserts, magazines, computer and office paper, etc.
  • Used oil – Motor oil, gear oil, automatic transmission fluid, kerosene, diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid (limit on all items is five (5) gallons)
  • Oil filters, cardboard, craft paper, clear glass (food containers only), brown glass (beverage bottles), aluminum can, batteries (car, truck, tractor, motorcycle, etc.)
  • In addition to the items above, our C&D Landfill located on Landfill Road, Laurens accepts the following items for recycling.
  • Metal – large appliances, structural steel, pipe, etc.
  • Limbs – there is a charge for limbs at $26 per ton
